What is Reiki?

Reiki is a healing practice that originated in Japan. Reiki practice can be traced to the spiritual teachings of Mikao Usui in Japan during the 1920s. Usui’s teachings included meditative techniques and healing practices. One student, Chujiro Hayashi, taught an American, Hawayo Takata. She (Hawayo Takata) introduced Reiki to the Western cultures in the late 1930s.

Reiki is the universal energy that flows through all living things and supports the body’s natural healing abilities. Reiki practitioners understand that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in self and others.

In a Reiki treatment the client lies down or sits comfortably, fully clothed. The practitioner places her/his hands lightly on or near the client’s body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, arms, knees, feet and back. Each position is held for two to five minutes, depending on the need of the client. The amount of time for the session may vary from 30 to 90 minutes. I have also demonstrated Reiki many times with the recipient sitting in a chair for a few minutes. Comments are positive with the person feeling relaxed and more centered or calm.

The client may feel heat, coolness or a tingling sensation from the practitioner’s hands. A warm and soothing energy flows from the hands into the client, promoting relaxation and releasing tension. A Reiki treatment can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate wellness and balance on all levels – physical, mental and emotional.

I have provided Reiki treatments for hundreds of people. I have witnessed Reiki helping those with addictions, pain, emotional turmoil, stress, depression, and insomnia, just to list a few. Our adult and adolescent clients report the following results:

 Relaxation
 Chronic pain diminished or gone
 A sense of peace
 Enhanced well-being
 Improvements in sleep
 Decrease in anxiety
 Decrease in stress
 Positive outlook
 Energized
 Improved self awareness
 Increased spiritual connection

For over five years I took a prescription sleeping pill every night.  The reason for that is because my mind would not shut down, I was always thinking.

After my Reiki training and becoming a Reiki master teacher, I have not taken sleeping pills for almost two years.  After four hand placements on myself, I fall asleep fast.  Reiki has also helped the pain in my knees go away.
I am more relaxed and I am a more positive person due to Reiki becoming a big part of my life.
